<< Hi Tom!
I've seen your posts many times on the Lightwave Mailing List, and you
certainly seem to be one of the most knowledgable people out there regarding
PC/Amiga/Lightwave/ Networking/etc. I noticed today that you are also a
dealer, so perhaps you can point me in the right direction in selecting some
new hardware?
Currently, I have a 4000 Toaster setup networked to a 3000T via Enlan. The
3000 has a PAR/TBC4 combo, along with a Sunrise 516 and an Emplant. I also
have a 486 running Lightwave, which I'm looking to replace IMMEDIATELY with a
P-133 system. I'd like to network the new PC with the Amigas, but I haven't
had much success with this in the past (using Chameleon and TCP on the
Amigas). The computers are integrated into a Betacam SP/M-II/S-VHS system.
I was also considering getting a PVR card w/ capture and Speed Razor for
non-linear editing, but I was not very enthused about the speed of this
combination, although the output is about the best I've seen. Because of
this, I have a new-found interest in the Flyer... at first I dismissed the
Flyer because of its initial quirkiness and questionable video quality, but
after seeing the HQ-5 mode recently at a show I was pretty impressed. I
currently do about 75% of my work in graphics/animation, and 25% in
traditional video, so the Flyer may be the best all-around solution for me.
Now for some questions! First, do you sell PC's and/or Flyers? I'm leaning
toward a Gateway P-133 w/ 32 MB and NT. Can you recommend a bulletproof way
of networking this to the Amigas? I'd like to render on the PC and output
through the PAR or possibly the Flyer. Will the Flyer compile individually
rendered frames as the PAR does, or do you have to render as a "clip"? (Can
you even render a "clip" on the PC Lightwave?) With a multi-platform network,
will ALL the animation frames be comparable? I haven't seen much animated
Flyer output... I know its not quite as good as the PVR, but how would you
compare it to the PAR? Finally, do you have any experience with Main Actor
Broadcast? I'd like to convert anims to Quicktime and AVI's, but nobody can
tell me if it can SAVE in these modes (the PD version only LOADS AVI, doesn't
SAVE AVI!)
>>
1st. I sell PC and Amiga 3rd party software and hardware. Not the machines. I
can get just about anything, Flyers, drives, TBC's LW, Network cards, etc.
2nd. Make sure your new PC will run under windows NT. Get it in writing from
whomever you buy from. Don't be riding the same bus as poor John Gross!!
3rd. Running NT the FTP program will work fine going to your Amiga. On the
Amiga side you really need a copy of Screamernet. It's the only stack I have
found to work well. All of your access will be from your PC to your Amiga
through FTP.
4th. Yes. The flyer has a macro that will allow you to import pre rendered
frames as flyer clips. Its in your NewTek drawer somewhere, sorry but look
under support or something close to that. I know it's there, I've used it!
You CAN NOT render from your PC to the Flyer as a clip. Use the macro.
5th. The flyer is a very close match to the par however HQ-5 mode may be a
little better, BUT!!!! The par has component out where the flyer does not. If
you don't need to edit, the PAR gets my vote.
6th. If you want to export anims as AVI, FLI, QUICKTIME, etc. GET A
PERCEPTION!! It will export all of those and more. It will act as your PAR,
and you can edit with it as well with the appropriate software. (Speed Razor
gets my vote).
7th. It sounds to me that you should get a Perception. It has better video
than anything I have seen. Including other platforms. (Avid,
Cube,Media100,Fast Video Machine, Etc.)
It has full component in and out. It its in your PC, (no network problems)
and will cost somewhat less than a Flyer. The PVR and AD2500 capture card
will run you about $2700.00 from us ( Ballpark ). A Micropolis 1991AV drive
will give you about 30 minutes of video at 5megs per second. (Betacam SP).
The drive costs about $2200 plus the case. Speed Razor is around $1000.00 So
your looking at about $6000.00 for that setup. You will also need a sound but
they are somewhat down to earth in price ($300.00).
I hope this helps you Leigh, If you need me give me a call. Good Luck!!
Tom Rennen
